HalfThrottle

Ride safe. Travel far. Do it soon.

Skeefoo is one of my biggest fans. So much so he turned his helmet into a halfthrottle advertisement. www.halfthrottle.com isn’t actually my website. It was already taken when I was picking a name and they sell decals and stickers. Mine is www.half-throttle.com, but hopefully people will figure that out and find the right one.

This is the MX Gears helmet from LS2. I’ve always thought the motocross style of helmet were cool looking. But I also love the flip open modular style of helmet, now I have both and seem to use them equally. I found it was easier to mount my Drift helmet camera on my HJC, so I use it for vlogging now. When I go out for some hard trail riding I take the LS2.

I like the visor as it helps to block the sun a bit. I’ve noticed that because the helmets nose comes to more of a point the wind screen has a bit of a “V” shape to it. This shape seems to help push the rain drops off to the side while I’m riding in a storm. My favorite thing about the helmet is the venting. It does a great job funneling fresh air inside, and somewhere hot and humid like Panama that is very important.

I’m really tired of double stick tape and universal mounts that don’t fit every helmet in the universe. If any helmet manufacturer wants to steal this idea and begin marketing a helmet specifically to motovloggers go for it.

There are a lot of riders out there who like to share with the world the places they travel. The extensive market research that I’ve conducted among myself tells me the world is ripe for a helmet with something like this designed in it.

An adjustable sliding helmet camera mounting system. Something that can be trusted to keep my camera exactly where I want it. Something that can be used with multiple cameras, don’t just make something for the Drift or one that only fits a GoPro.

The Forum snowboards I mention with the slider are no longer made, I tried to find a picture of one but can’t remember what they called it. Infinite position mounting system or something like that. Forum has now switched to a more traditional style of mounting system. Something like that might also work for a camera mounting system on a helmet. I don’t know the technical specs here people I’m just a dude with a camera. You are the one with the helmet company filled with high priced collage educated engineers, have them figure out the details!

I’ve only had my Drift helmet camera a few days, and it’s been raining almost non stop since it arrived. I hear it’s okay to take it in the rain, but it’s so new and shiny I just want to keep it that way a little longer.

This video is about capturing audio inside a helmet which can be tricky for several reasons. Wind blowing in the helmet, and the small space inside the helmet can make it very difficult on your microphone. When I first started vlogging I was using a separate audio capture device. The Olympus VN-8100PC Digital Voice recorder. I hooked it up to this microphone and found it to be way to sensitive inside the helmet. This was designed to record audio in an open room. I tired many different methods to calm it down, even went to far as to stick it inside of a tampon but was never really pleased with the results.

Recently I got my hands on a Drift Innovations Stealth 170 helmet camera with the external microphone and it sounds much better. And extra bonus the Drift’s mic records in stereo so no comments saying, “I can only hear out the left channel!”

I’m still getting used to filming with the Drift and can’t wait for all the comments saying, “Your camera is crooked!” Yeah I’ve noticed guys I edit the damn video, and will fix it before the next one.

I’m the sort of person who gets really frustrated if everything isn’t perfect when I sit down to edit. When I was working with the digital voice recorder and it sounded so terrible I would just cringe while editing. I hated to hear how bad it sounded. The Drift’s mic was designed to record inside a helmet and deal with wind noise. You will notice in the video that the wind noise pretty much disappears when I switch the audio over to the Drift at the end. Nothing ruins a motorcycle video faster than screeching wind noise from a microphone.

Vagina Rider!

For the motorcyclist who has everything… and wants his head to look like a giant angy alien vagina which has come to Earth for the destruction of mankind.

Sadly only 50 were ever produced. All were sold between 2009 and 2010, so if you want one ebay is your only hope.  If you’re lucky enough to find one I’m willing to bet it already has an amazing custom paint job.

More disappointing than the limited run this helmet had, is the lack of an ass crack on the back.  Seriously Bandit Helmets, if you’re gonna go.  Go all the way.

Checking their website it looks like they also make the helmet for Top Gear’s “Stig.” So they can’t be all bad, but I think I’ll stick with my HJC SY-MAX 2. People who call themselves “HalfThrottle” should never dress like the Stig. However I would be happy to produce a video review of the vagina helmet for my youtube channel. I’ll be waiting for my sample in the mail.
